The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
