Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
