Toto Wolff Set to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
