No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months.
