The people of Israel commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
People have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The official said the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the both parties.
Key Matters in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict management of the area
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."
"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population desire the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"When the night arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my little child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional fatalities had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medics said.
