The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
