Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
