There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict required resolution, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president said discussions about the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently preceded rumors that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in negotiations", he commented.
