New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
