Jennifer Walton's Debut Record "Daughters" Explores Grief and Elegance

Within this track "Miss America", listeners find themselves in a lodging near JFK airfield, where the musician receives the heartbreaking update of her father's cancer discovery. The Sunderland-born artist was touring America for the first time, playing with indie band Kero Kero Bonito, and abruptly sadness casts a shadow, coloring all with melancholy. Unsteady keys and hushed orchestration underscore dark reports emanating from the tour van: "Rural scenes and crumbling homes / Strip-mall, drug deal, panic attacks."

Her soft vocals are delivered with a deadpan manner, yet this album's tension stems from her keen writing—mixing stories, traditional phrases, and blunt personal notes—coupled with surprising maximalism. Not many songs recently showcase stronger storytelling flair compared to "Shelly", which depicts the death of a deer and spirals toward a petrol-laden confrontation, reminiscent of literary works lit with glimpses of distorted cello. Anxious, subdued verses featuring resonating, plucked guitar transition to expansive refrains, with Walton's voice digitally manipulated to become something all-knowing and sinister.

Listeners may previously be familiar with Walton from her work as a music creator, disc jockey, and member to bands such as Caroline. The album's sonic turns reflect her varied background. The first track "Sometimes" bursts with fanfare, like a string band taken by surprise, whereas "Born Again Backwards" drastically ups the tempo with an intense, beautiful, looping drum fill. Dense walls of sound, expertly mixed by a long-term collaborator, seem at once rough and spiritual, while her dark, enchanted thoughts culminate on highlight "Lambs", a song that momentarily transforms into a twirling jig. "I hope your existence doesn't conclude with dying," Walton bargains, exuding poignant gallows humor.
