Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
