A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to book accommodation when I arrived, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of bed down in the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. With no idea what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering towards a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend those hours in a place operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing an interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her evening job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I existed within my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. I hope karma has repaid her good deed abundantly. The world needs more people with such compassion.
